The “Lichttoren” (light tower) is a building (built 1909-1921) in the city center of Eindhoven, which housed the first factory of the Philips lighting division. Over the years, Philips has moved its production and product development to other places. However, the Lichttoren is still an icon for Eindhoven to this day.
In 2009, AWG architects was responsible for the design and conversion of the Lichttoren into a hybrid building for living, working and leisure. The entire building was stripped down to the concrete structure and the characteristic large windows were replaced by double glazing with narrow steel window profiles that were specially developed for the building.
All the lofts were offered as bare spaces so that future residents could design their own loft with their own architect. Villanueva Architect designed a south-facing loft on the 5th floor with a view of the light square and the Witte Dame (Design Academy Eindhoven). To maintain the industrial character with its high ceilings, a design has been made with an open floor plan. The bedroom, kitchen and living room are all located in an open space and are visually connected. The bedroom, including the bathroom, are visually separated from the living space by placing the relevant areas on an elevation.
